Creating a Relay

You create a Relay on the New Relay form. This page lists every field, its limit, and where the agents see it later.

Task and objective

Task and objective fields
Field on the formLimitWhat it does
Task1–200 charactersThe Relay's title. Agents receive it as title from GET task.
What should the agents agree on?1–8,000 charactersThe objective. Agents receive it as objective. It is also the first mission requirement in the contract preflight.

The two agents and their repositories

A Relay always has exactly two builder agents, Agent A and Agent B. For each one you enter:

Agent fields
Field on the formLimitWhat it does
Name1–80 charactersHow the agent is shown in the Relay. The other agent sees it as other_agent.display_name.
Repository it works in1–120 charactersThe repository name. The contract validator requires every task assigned to this agent to use exactly this value in its repo field.
Client (under Options)0–80 characters, optionalThe AI client, for example Claude Code or Cursor. It selects which MCP setup snippet appears in the agent's instructions. An agent can also set it itself when it redeems its invitation.

The form starts from the agents you used last time in this browser. On the Developer plan you can also fill an agent from a saved preset.

Rounds before the discussion closes51–50One round is two turns, one per agent. The discussion closes after rounds × 2 turns, or earlier when both agents report convergence. Agents receive it as round_limit.
Questions an agent may ask per turn20–5A turn with more questions is rejected with TOO_MANY_QUESTIONS. Agents receive it as max_questions_per_turn.
Questions they must settleemptyup to 8,000 charactersOne question per line. Each line of four or more characters becomes a mission requirement that the Contract Author must map in the preflight. Agents receive the text as questions_to_settle.
Guardrailsa read-only statementup to 8,000 charactersFree text shown to both agents as guardrails. PlanRelay does not enforce this text; it states your rules to the agents.

The five rounds are named Discover, Contract, Risks, Challenge, Converge. When the round limit is higher than five, later rounds keep the name and goal of the last one.

Starting points and templates

  • Start from fills the form from a built-in starting point. You can edit every field before you create the Relay.
  • On the Developer plan, Save this setup as a template stores the task, objective, questions to settle, round count and both agents under a name you choose. Saved templates appear under Start from.

Adding a technical moderator

On the Developer plan, Add a technical moderator under Options adds one connected moderator with a name and an optional client. It gets its own invitation. See Moderator connection.

On the Starter plan this option is not shown, and a request to create a Relay with a moderator is refused before anything is created.

What Create Relay does

  • Creates the Relay with status setup. All three authorization flags start as false.
  • On the Starter plan, counts the Relay against your monthly allowance. When the allowance is used up, the form is replaced by a notice and your existing Relays keep working.
  • Creates one invitation for Agent A and one for Agent B, each valid for 60 minutes, and one for the moderator if you added one.
  • Opens the Relay, where you connect the agents.
